In many countries, the number of banknotes in circulation is growing. However, it can be assumed that this may change and that this growth will have to give way to stagnation or even shrinkage. This is already the case in a few countries, for instance the Netherlands and Norway. In this immersion session, the two experts from Norges Bank and De Nederlandsche Bank discuss the challenges and possible measures a central bank might use to secure the necessary availability of banknotes and coins.
